Nicht erst, seitdem die alten Herren vom “Buena Vista Social Club” in Deutschland Furore machten, ist die Musik “Lateinamerikas und der Karibik” in aller Ohren. Vom Rumba, über Mambo, die hüftbetonten karibischen Tänze wie Salsa und Merengue bis hin zum Samba. Ebenso interessant ist das historisch-soziale Umfeld, in dem diese musikalischen Welten ihren Ursprung haben: die Kolonialgeschichte, die bewegte und leidvolle Geschichte der Kontinente zwischen Kolonialherren, Bürgerkriegen und Diktaturen, die Wurzeln und Einflüsse von Indios und Schwarzen, die als Sklaven zum Beispiel den “Santería Kult” aus Westafrika mitgebracht haben, dessen musikalische und tänzerische Elemente sich in zahlreichen lateinamerikanischen Musikstilen wiederfinden und einen Siegeszug um die ganze Welt angetreten haben.

Die Gruppe “Comparsa de Circulo Tambores” bringt die Musikstile des Straßen- karnevals aus Kuba nach Deutschland. Der unverwechselbare Klang der Congas, die treibende Kraft der klingenden Campanas und der sonoren Bombos kreieren unwiderstehliche Rhythmen. Bei dieser Musik spürt man deutlich die unglaublich starke Anziehung und magische Kraft, die die afro~kubanischen Rhythmen kulturübergreifend auf die Zuhörer ausüben. Aber auch deren Bedeutung, die sie für den Identitätserhalt der schwarzen Bevölkerung auf Kuba immer gehabt haben. Hier liegen auch die Ursprünge für die Rhythmen vieler populärer Musikstile wie Salsa, Mambo oder Merengue.

Die Gruppe hat sich im Sommer 2012 mit dem Musiker und Percussionisten “Yansser Cardoso” aus Kuba gegründet. Zum Repertoire der Gruppe gehören neben den traditionellen Stilen wie Mozambique, Conga Comparsa und Conga Camagüey auch andere vielfältige Rhythmen aus den Bereichen Afro und Latin.

Auf Kuba gibt es neben der Santeria eine Vielzahl von Religionen und rituellen Rhythmen. Der Ursprung liegt in der afrikanischen Kultur und deren Traditionen. Folgende afró ~ cubanische Rhythmen werden vorgestellt: Palo (Congo), Arará (Vodú) und Abakuá. Falls möglich, bitte eine Conga mitbringen!

Juan Bauste Granda ist der musikalische Leiter des Conjunto Folklórico del’ Oriente, dem ältesten Folkloreballett Kubas aus Santiago de Cuba. Zudem ist er initierter Santero und Leiter der Conga San Pedrito. | www.juanbaustegranda.com

Eddie Bobe // The sound of summer in Nu Yorica — the most northerly capital of the Caribbean. Organized by Eddie Bobe, on Sunday afternoons over the past 30 years, New York’s Central Park has been the meeting place for celebrating NYC Rumba. Here a mixture of Nuyoricans (New York Puerto Ricans), Afro-Cubans and some Afro-Americans drum, sing and dance from early afternoon until late into the evening. Unofficial food vendors sell Puerto Rican and Cuban dishes as well as rum, beer and shots of “Mamahuana,” a homemade alcoholic drink. Despite regular harassment by the authorities, the gatherings continue to thrive. Central Park Rumba captures the uniqueness of New York’s rumba scene with its special mix of Cuban and Nuyorican master musicians, which both unites it and sets it apart from rumba in its original home of Cuba.

Eddie was born in the late ’50s in Puerto Rico to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother, the beat of drums running through his blood from his first breath. Eddie’s experience and knowledge encompass the musical traditions of the Caribbean as well as the Caribbean´s African heritage. Eddie is a master percussionist, vocalist, composer, arranger and instructor in the Cuban, Haitian and Puerto Rican folklore traditions. He specializes in Cuban rumba and bata drumming, Haitian voodum, and Puerto Rican bomba, plena and jábaro music.Eddies father was a percussionist and singer in Puerto Rico, thus, Eddie began singing very early with his father. Later he came across the sound of Mongo Santamaria. Mongo´s percussion style impressed him so much that he said to himself: “That’s what I want to do!” Currently, he teaches master classes at Julliard, the New School for Social Research and other schools. He also plays in many different of bands and groups and appears for a moment in the film “The Thomas Crown Affair,” where he is seen playing the bongos. He also played on the soundtrack to the film. Bobé has been an essential part of the Central Park Rumba for 25 years. For more than 30 years, Nuyoricans, Afro-Cubans and African -Americans have gathered in the park to play the Rumba. He was asked to create a CD which represented the New York rumba sound, and which captured the spirit of the rumba in New York. Soon after, he handpicked master percussionists for the studio recording of Central Park Rumba.Bobé describes himself and his music is eclectic, in the same way the rumba played in Central Park is eclectic. The drumming of rumba is precise and accurate, despite the many different influences from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Africa, and America. As a percussionist his expertise includes the drum set, bata and conga drums (tumbadoras), timbales and bongos. He has made a unique contribution to the lineage of playing multiple congas in creative and contemporary music settings. He also specializes in transposing hand drum concepts to the drumset.He has performed and recorded with Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D’Rivera, Peter Erskin, Michele Rosewoman, Afro-Cuba Drum Ensemble, Art Pepper, Chico O’Farrill, and Steve Coleman, as well as many others.

Global Player – Tanz in den Mai mit Da Cruz, DJ Rafael Baska & dem Funkhaus Europa Soundsystem mit Resident-DJ AliT. Da Cruz gastieren bei Global Player in Mülheim an der Ruhr und lassen uns mit Afrofunk, Breakbeats und Indie-Reggae in den Mai tanzen! Da Cruz ist eine schweizerische Fusion-Band, die brasilianischen Bossa mit Afrofunk, Drum´n´Bass und elektronischen Spielarten verbindet. Das Herzstück der sechsköpfigen Combo sind der Schweizer Beatbastler und musikalisches Mastermind Ane H. und die brasilianische Seele und Namensgeberin der Band: Sängerin und Frontfrau Mariana Da Cruz.

Beide haben ihre eigene musikalische Biographie – er war einst Frontmann der grantigen Band Swamp Terrorists; sie hingegen schlug zunächst die Kirchenchor-Laufbahn ein und trat in frühen Jahren als Bossa-Nova-Sängerin in den schlecht beleuchteten Clubs von São Paulo auf. Vereint jedoch geben sie das Paradebeispiel dafür, dass sich Gegensätze nicht nur anziehen, sondern wohlmöglich sogar zum Ausziehen animieren! Mit Dancehall- und Samba-Rhythmen, kochenden Bläsersätzen, kantigen Gitarren, Afrobeat, Acid-Lines und elektronischen Sub-Bässen ist diese Combo prädestiniert dafür, den Mülheimer Ringlokschuppen so richtig einzuheizen! Sängerin Mariana Da Cruz wird mit ihrer energetischen Stimme und brasilianischen Texten ebenfalls dazu beitragen, das Publikum auf den anstehenden Sommer einzuschwören! “Boom Boom Boom” heißt ihr bekanntester Song – diese Message ist eindeutig!
